Thank God for Evolution!

I was going to recommend people give an artificial leg for Christmas - they're perfect stocking stuffers - but now I'm recommending this amazing book. It's only apparently off topic. Thank God for Evolution! is an amazing vision of the intertwining futures of religion and science: clear and beautiful. Michael Dowd shows how the marriage of science and religion will transform your life and our world.

And we boomers are about a positive future, are we not? This is a courageous, intellectually provocative work that has reframed one of the biggest splits in our world. People who read the book tend to be very "blown away" as am I.

This may be the best-blurbed book of all time. Take a look at http://thankgodforevolution.com/praise/

Focusing and Meditation

Focusing is a form of body-centered paying attention, a skillful way of being with what's really there for us.

Although it came out of the world of therapy, it can be used for meditation too, and provides an interesting perspective to whatever practice you may be doing.

From the article . . .

Before Focusing, "Let go" could have been tattooed on my forehead for all the times I'd heard it and not known how! But here, inside Focusing was the sense of being touched by something greater than my little self. Here was the rapturous abandonment, the unmistakable sense of presence that the spiritual literature speaks of. All resulting from a Focusing session with no language for spirit, that talked rather about the body. Paradoxical, but no less delicious. Lying there in the long grass, I was quite happy to let the incongruities go their merry way, and just keep company with the mysterious thing-with-no-words.

"Thing with no words" I'm saying. But Focusing has symbols that help it move, doesn't it? Words, phrases, images. Yes. But once the shift has come you can let these go for a little while and just be with what comes. The words you could say, are like tumblers in a combination lock, valuable for getting the safe open. Invaluable, in fact. But once the door is open you many not need them for a while. For a little time you can simply enjoy the treasure that's inside. Focusing is a door and meditation is like keeping a wordless company with what's there. Of course this in turn opens up other doors . . .

I believe Focusing will prove as valuable to the wide world of meditation as it already is proving in the world of therapy.
